Things to Know

Cambodia is a beautiful and fascinating country in the heart of Southeast Asia. Rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, it’s a place where ancient traditions blend with modern life, and where visitors are welcomed with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. From the world-famous temples of Angkor to peaceful countryside villages, Cambodia offers unforgettable experiences for travelers of all kinds.

Location and People

Bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, and with the Gulf of Thailand to the south, Cambodia is perfectly located for travelers exploring the region. The country has a population of around 17 million people, with most being ethnic Khmer. Cambodians are known for their friendliness, resilience, and deep-rooted cultural pride. Despite a challenging past, the spirit of the people shines through in everyday life—whether you’re sharing a meal in a family-run restaurant or chatting with locals at a village market.

The capital city, Phnom Penh, sits at the junction of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. It’s a busy, energetic city full of history, vibrant street life, and modern cafes and shops. Other major cities include Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor Wat, and Sihanoukville, a coastal town known for its beaches and nearby islands.

Language and Religion

The official language is Khmer, which is spoken throughout the country. However, English is commonly used in tourist areas, especially by young people and those working in hospitality. You’ll also hear some French, Chinese, and other local languages in different regions.

Cambodia is a deeply spiritual country. About 95% of the population practices Theravada Buddhism, and you’ll see monks in saffron robes walking through towns and villages every morning collecting alms. There are thousands of Buddhist temples across the country, many of which are open to visitors.

Currency and Costs

The official currency is the Cambodian Riel (KHR), but the US Dollar (USD) is widely used and accepted almost everywhere. In fact, most prices in hotels, restaurants, and markets are listed in dollars. It’s common to receive small change in riel, especially for amounts under $1.

Cambodia is also an affordable destination. You can enjoy a delicious local meal for just a few dollars, and accommodation options range from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts.

Getting Around

Getting around Cambodia is part of the adventure. In towns and cities, the most popular way to travel is by tuk-tuk—a three-wheeled motor taxi that’s perfect for short rides and sightseeing. In more rural areas, bicycles and motorbikes are common. For longer journeys, there are buses, shared vans, and domestic flights connecting major destinations.

Road conditions are improving, and many national highways are now paved and well-maintained. Just keep in mind that travel times can still be a bit longer than in more developed countries.

Electricity and Connectivity

Cambodia uses 230V / 50Hz electricity, and the standard plug types are C, E, and F (two round pins). If you’re coming from another region, you may need an adapter. Internet access is widely available, especially in cities, hotels, and cafes, and mobile data is cheap and reliable.

Final Thoughts

Cambodia is more than just a destination—it’s a feeling. It’s the sound of monks chanting at sunrise, the scent of fresh mangoes and grilled street food, the sight of ancient stone faces smiling through the jungle, and the laughter of children playing by the roadside.

Whether you come to explore the temples, relax on the beach, cycle through the countryside, or simply meet the people who call this place home, Cambodia will leave a mark on your heart.

Climate and Weather

Cambodia has a tropical climate and is warm all year round, with average temperatures between 25°C and 35°C (77°F to 95°F). There are two main seasons:

Dry Season (November to April): This is the best time to visit, with clear skies and cooler temperatures, especially from December to February. It’s a great season for temple tours, cycling, and exploring nature.

Rainy Season (May to October): The monsoon rains bring short, heavy showers, usually in the afternoon. The countryside turns lush and green, and rivers and lakes fill up—perfect for boat trips or enjoying the peaceful beauty of rural Cambodia.

Even during the rainy season, travel is still possible, and many travelers enjoy the quieter atmosphere and lower prices.

Visa Information for Cambodia

Visiting Cambodia is easy and welcoming, and getting a visa is a simple process for most travelers. Whether you’re coming to explore the ancient temples of Angkor, relax on the beaches, or experience the countryside, here’s what you need to know about Cambodian visas:

Do I Need a Visa?

Yes, most foreign travelers need a visa to enter Cambodia. However, getting one is easy and affordable. There are three main ways to get a Cambodian visa:

1. Visa on Arrival (VOA)

You can get a Tourist Visa (T-class) when you arrive at major international airports and border crossings. It’s available at:

  • Phnom Penh International Airport

  • Siem Reap International Airport

  • Sihanoukville International Airport

  • Major land borders with Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos

Requirements:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months

  • One passport-sized photo

  • Visa fee: Around $30 USD (cash only)

The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days and can be extended once for an additional 30 days.

2. E-Visa (Online Application)

Cambodia offers a convenient e-Visa system for tourist visitors. You can apply online before you arrive.

Website: https://www.evisa.gov.kh

Steps:

  • Fill out the application form

  • Upload a passport photo and copy of your passport

  • Pay the visa fee online (around $36 USD)

  • Receive your visa by email (usually within 3 business days)

  • Print the visa and bring it with you

The e-Visa is valid for 30 days and can be used at major airports and some land border checkpoints.

3. Visa from a Cambodian Embassy

If you prefer, or if you’re from a country that is not eligible for VOA or e-Visa, you can apply at your nearest Cambodian embassy or consulate.

Visa Extensions

You can extend a tourist visa for another 30 days at the Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh or through a travel agency. Overstaying your visa will result in a fine of $10 per day, so it’s better to extend on time.

Visa-Free Entry

A few countries have visa-free access to Cambodia for short stays, including:

  • ASEAN countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and others (15 to 30 days depending on the country)

Always check the latest entry requirements before traveling, as visa policies can change.

Important Tips

  • Bring cash in USD for visa fees at the airport or border.

  • Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity.

  • Keep a printed copy of your e-Visa and travel documents.

  • If you’re entering by land, be cautious of unofficial visa agents charging extra fees.
